For 14 years ihave had the same hat. Its a little bit battered, but still going strong. Its the best hat I have owned. If You invest in the quality kit, the return is long, both in the 'life' of the product and the ease of its use. In the Boreal and broadleaf forests, on the plains and up in the mountains and on the sea's and lakes, I don't think there is a more used outdoor hat.

Given how many times I have washed it (in lakes and streams and the sink!) its not shrunk or deformed, its soaked up thousands of watts of sunshine and tipped off hundreds of gallons of water..not to mention snow and ice and the occasional bird dropping. Its great for travel as it pops back up when crushed in a case, you can tie it on in a high wind and when hunting, I snap back the sides so as not to catch the brush. In fact its only weakness is that it can (I have to be fair, this is over some time) stain with sweat if not washed with enough frequency  .........but then, who doesn't?

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD:

Most hat makers make 4 or 5 sizes; we make 13. As a matter of principle, no one shall be deprived of the pleasure and privileges of Tilley Hat ownership simply because of an uncommon head size.

Like footwear, your Tilley Hat must be sized properly. To find your hat size, use a tape measure and draw it right around your head. For the best-looking and most comfortable fit, please make sure that the bottom of the tape touches your eyebrows while resting straight around your head. Hold it there comfortably and do not pull tight! Tell us this measurement in inches or centimetres. We’ll take it from there.

If you already know your regular (not a Tilley) hat size, please ask for one size larger when you order your Tilley. For instance, if you're sure you're a 7 1/4, order a 7 3/8.

The Tilley Hat fits more comfortably than other hats. It’s designed to be worn low on your head and slightly loose. It should be held on by gravity, not by painful pressure on your forehead! For the proper fit, you should be able to easily insert two fingers, flat, between the middle of your forehead and the front of the Hat. The Hat should be loose enough that you can rotate it to the left and right, and lift it up and down, without friction on your forehead. When it’s windy, use the cord!

Wash it frequently or non-removable sweat stains will mar it and possibly rot it. Machine wash on delicate cycle separately or hand wash in cool water. Do not use bleach as it remains inside the Hat, slowly rotting it. Smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry. When the Hat is dry, simply re-stretch it, as an American sailor showed us, by putting your knee in the crown, and pulling firmly on the opposite side.
